A passion for cuisine flutters through Food at La Boite

A passion for cuisine flutters through Food at La Boite

The inspirational quote from former British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli that ‘man is only great when he acts from passion’ is a powerful mantra, which has been channelled in the latest theatrical production to hit La Boite Theatre.

La Boite Theatre at Kelvin Grove is now playing host to Food a performance that celebrates how a love for the kitchen can help to transform the world around you. The production is a combination of movement, words and a saucy plotline, and is the result of a collaboration between theatre company Belvoir and dance-theatre great, Force Majeure.

Food portrays the story of two sisters who run their family’s takeaway joint, which is perched on the edge of a forgettable highway. Both ladies’ destinies seem to be entwined in a life of boredom, until a young Turkish traveller arrives. This charming young lad inspires in the girls a sensuality and passion for life that begins in the kitchen, but soon envelops the rest of their lives. The takeaway store is transformed and in its place a quaint restaurant arrives – the perfect location for sister Elma to flaunt her talent for home-cooked meals.

It’s at this point that the audience has a chance to participate, with selected members becoming restaurant guests and having the chance to sample some of the soups, sourdough and wines on the menu. Starring Fayssal Bazzi, Kate Box and Emma Jackson, Food will be at La Boite’s Roundhouse Theatre from April 16–27. Tickets to the production can still be purchased online.
