Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) has taken the widely publicised step of recording the actor’s performances live; that is, with minimal dubbing or post-production fiddling. The result is renditions of standards such as ‘I Dreamed a Dream’, and ‘On My Own’ that crackle with the intensity of a live show. Contrasting the squalor and grime of 19th century Paris with the indomitable nature of the human spirit, the musical adaptation of Les Miserables tells the story of Valjean, a reformed prisoner. Now a factory owner and politician, Valjean has plunged into the mayhem that was the Paris uprising of 1832.

Stars abound with Hugh Jackman cementing his position as one of show businesses foremost ‘triple threats’ in playing the valourous Jean Valjean, while Anne Hathaway confirms her singing prowess with a touching rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ – last made famous by one Susan Boyle. Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried are also present, but of particular note is Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter’s coupling as the dastardly Thenardiers.

Despite the grim subject matter, Les Miserables – whether in print or on the stage – is an uplifting tale brimming with fascinating characters. Brought to the screen by an Academy Award winning director, it is sure to be a visual feast and an ideal festive season film. See the film from December 26.
