Empire

New York City sparkles in burlesque Empire

Burlesque may conjure up images of a spangled Dita Von Teese, but the art form has a far lengthier history than the modern movements of the raven-haired femme fatale. The dramatic theatrical works of burlesque have been performed since the late 17th century, though certainly these affairs were not as saucy as they may be today. Brisbane audiences will soon be able to enjoy a range of interpretations of traditional burlesque when Empire comes to town.

Burlesque shows are traditionally ones that indulge in a love of sequins and laughs, alongside plenty of sensuality. It’s this kind of variety show that is performed by the cast of Empire. Fresh from a world-premiere hit season on famed Broadway, the production is a creation of Spiegelworld and Nine Live.

The show is an ode to the concrete jungle of New York City, and contains plenty of acrobatics, slapstick hijinks and a striptease or two. Empire runs from May 24 to June 16 and will feature a cast assembled internationally.

The stage on which Empire is set is just as elaborate as the show to be performed. Only three metres of stage is gifted to performers, who showcase their talents amidst the intimacy of the Spiegeltent. The 700-seat antique venue will arrive completely furnished with luxurious velvet booths to recline on and bevelled mirrors throughout. Patrons will also be able to enjoy the performance with a drink in hand, courtesy of the speakeasy bar that will accompany the set.
