Simultaneous musical performances help celebrate Earth Hour
When the world turns off the lights for Earth Hour, musicians will tune their strings and be a part of a simultaneous concert performance spearheaded by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Concert for the Planet is the inaugural mass-participation and multi-location performance of Holst’s The Planets. On Saturday March 28 as the world prepares to turn off the lights for Earth Hour, the Sydney Orchestra will be live-streaming its performance of The Planets across the globe as well as actively encouraging other musicians to participate. Born from the idea of adding a soundtrack to the darkness, composer Charlie Chan and technology innovationist Justin Baird came up with the Global Orchestra, a way of drawing attention to the environment during Earth Hour.
Participants anywhere in the world can play along to the Sydney Orchestra’s performance or re-interpret the piece for their own concert. The orchestra hopes to have 100,000 participants across Australia and abroad playing in sync to the soundtrack during Earth Hour. If you aren’t a musician but would like to soundtrack your Earth Hour you can host a listening event or join an event that is taking place near you. To see how you can participate, head to the Global Orchestra website.
