Japanese cinema showcased at GOMA in Cult Japan

Japan has been a pioneering force in world cinema, with highly stylistic and acclaimed films since the end of World War Two. Cult Japan will be screening a curated selection of features from July 3 to September 2.

From animation to horror to technological thrillers, Japan has always been a country where vivid and imaginative cinema thrives. With an identifiable style that has earned acclaim across the world, Japanese cinema is an increasingly vital contributor to the world of film and the GOMA Cinematheque will present a cross-section of films from iconic producers and thematic strands. Cult Japan has been divided into five sub-genres with each section dedicated to a different aspect of the multi-faceted Japanese film industry.

‘Strange Creatures and Dark Cities’ will tie together science fiction and monster movies, imagining grim futures and social disorder. ‘Cursed People and Places’ will show off the best ghost and horror stories Japan has to offer. ‘Tough Guys and Dangerous Women’ will draw from Japanese exploitation cinema to show stories of vengeance and action. ‘The Body Electric’ will explore the ideas surrounding the body and technology and the social issues that go along with it. Finally, ‘Hayao Miyazaki’ will offer a retrospective of the acclaimed animator and director’s career. Head to the GOMA Cinema website to see the full list of films and secure single or five film passes before they disappear.
