Cinema Obscura sneaks on to Brisbane’s film scene

On secret rooftops, down secret laneways, in unknown basements or a random back shed, pop-up cinemas are being erected by film-loving types keen to resurrect Brisbane’s independent film scene.

Limited to 50 guests each screening, Cinema Obscura is Brisbane’s new monthly underground film soiree, showing cult and classic films.

Reinventing the way we experience film, the first event is on this Friday, located ‘somewhere central’ where BYO beverages are possible (corkage applies). The lucky ticket holders will receive an email before the night, with instructions on how to get to the pop-up cinema’s hidden location.

Founded by film nerd Jordan Bastian, a former programmer and projectionist at Tribal Theatre, and manager of Paddington’s cult Network Video, Cinema Obscura emulates the whispering excitement of a flash mob, but with the experience exclusive to those lucky few ticketholders. Screening everything from 1980s sci-fi to 1940s musicals and beyond, Cinema Obscura has taken the buzz of London’s Secret Cinema and localised to a Brisbane-taste, utilising the hidden and unused spaces that make us culture proud.
