ITEM, a new dance-theatre work from Brisbane’s Dance Masala Bollywood Dance Company, flips the script on the idealised storytelling tropes of the Bollywood genre and gives it a feminist twist. Picture this – you're driving in the car with your friends when suddenly someone queues up an Elton John playlist. The familiar piano riff of 'Tiny Dancer' kicks in and by the time you've reached the chorus, you're ready to sing your heart out. Suddenly, you friend belts out an unfamiliar lyric – "hoooold me clooooser Tony Danza". You look at each other in confusion and you think to yourself "how did they get it so wrong?". This misheard song lyric is the premise, or rather, the thought-starter, for Metro Arts' first show for 2023, Hold Me Closer Tony Danza. more
