Brisbane Queer Film Festival

Welcome back Brisbane Queer Film Festival

Each new year brings with it Brisbane’s boast-worthy slew of film festivals that appreciate each and every of its residents’ interest groups. In addition to the circuit’s French, Iranian and various other international entities there is also the very popular Brisbane Queer Film Festival (BQFF).

The festival was born in 2000, being supported and coerced into adulthood by the team at Brisbane Powerhouse. BQFF today is the largest festival to celebrate queer cinema in the state, and the third largest in Australia. If you take the time to attend the event, you’ll notice that the majority of films on show would rarely see the light of day on the big screen otherwise. The antithesis of mainstream, the festival screens quirky short-films, features and documentaries that have been procured from all around the globe. Of course, each of these flicks has a running theme to be included in BQFF – they each portray a story for or about the queer community.

Not just a foray into cinema about a once-taboo subject, BQFF also wishes to surround its event with a supportive community to celebrate diversity. BQFF runs from April 5–14. Tickets for the event can be bought online.
