What films to watch this Boxing Day

After an enjoyable (yet exhausting) Christmas Day filled with food, family and friends, Boxing Day can’t help but be lazy. With seven new films out this December 26, take to the cinema and let your mind drift through the varied creations of the silver screen …

Disney has two releases gracing the big screen this Boxing Day. Loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Snow Queen, Frozen follows the story of fearless princess Anna as she teams up with rugged mountain man Kristoff, his pet reindeer and a hapless snowman to find her estranged sister, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in a never-ending winter of blizzards and snowstorms. Saving Mr. Banks follows the untold backstory of how Disney classic Mary Poppins made it to the silver screen. Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney as he tries to woo the writer of Mary Poppins, P. L. Travers (Emma Thompson), to turn her words into a Hollywood film.

American drama Short Term 12 is the new feature film from I Am Not a Hipster director Daniel Cretton. The indie flick follows the struggles of Grace (Brie Larson), a compassionate 20-something supervisor at a home for at-risk teenagers, as she learns that her life is about to change forever.

A beautifully shot film of love and tragedy, The Railway Man stars Colin Firth as Eric Lomax, one of the thousands of Allied prisoners of war forced to work on the construction of the Thai/Burma railway during WWII. Based on a true story, The Railway Man sees Eric confront the demons of his past in an attempt not to destroy his relationship with his newfound love, Patti (Nicole Kidman).

PHILOMENA is based on the investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee. The film follows Philomena Lee’s (Judie Dench) endeavour to find the long-lost son she was forced to give up for adoption many years before, with the help of an out-of-work journalist.

Ben Stiller both directs and stars in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty – a story of a daydreamer who regularly ‘zones out’ to a fantasy world of heroism and romance, to escape his invisible life. When it looks like his job as a photo editor at Life magazine is threatened, Walter breaks from his shell to embark on a real global adventure.

If you’re still unsure of which film to pick, there’s always The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, to continue the book’s journey on the screen.
