Black Diggers relives Australian history at QPAC
Live theatre helps transcend a nearly forgotten, yet culturally significant piece of Australian history to the forefront in Black Diggers.
You don’t have to be a history buff to become instantly captivated by the powerful and honest performance that is Black Diggers. Named as a key highlight of this year’s Brisbane Festival, the grand-scale production brings the untold story of heroic indigenous Australian soldiers to the stage. Marking 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, during a time where segregation and racism were the norm, the story reveals how Aboriginal men hid their own cultural heritage to fight for the freedom of the British Commonwealth. Developed from extensive research and interviews with veterans, families, historians and academics, director Wesley Enoch and writer Tom Wright have created a plot that will push audiences to rethink the definition of honour and sacrifice.
For those craving more about this significant event, an ABC symposium discussion will take place on Sunday September 21 at 6:30 pm at ABC Studios.
