Long weekend: Whale watching on the Gold Coast

The saying that ‘the best things are sometimes right under your nose’ is so true when it comes to whale watching. Just an hour south of Brisbane, we have the best vantage point to spot thousands of humpback whales as they migrate north to mate and give birth in warmer waters, following a sojourn in Antarctica.

Since the Australian East Coast whaling industry ended in 1963, where humpback numbers were estimated around 100, the population has steadily recovered. With numbers increasing around 10% every year, the population has swelled to more than 11,000, enabling these environmental protectors of the sea to do what they do best – improve ocean conditions as they migrate.

This season has started off with a bang on the Gold Coast with whale numbers traversing the coast at a high. Several of the barnacle-laden mammals were spotted last week when we had the opportunity to experience There She Blows, a gorgeous package created by QT Gold Coast in conjunction with Gold Coast Adventures.

After a night in a luxurious ocean-view room, where the sound of waves crashing on the shore was our lullaby, we woke for an early morning breakfast in the award-winning Bazaar marketplace. Tastes from around the world were on offer, along with freshly brewed coffee and a vast array of juices and smoothies, perfect to fill the belly before a morning out on the water.

After being chauffeured down to Marina Mirage and boarding the Gold Coast Whale Adventure catamaran, we were on our way to track down a whale or two. It was one of those days where the sky was clear blue with not a cloud and the ocean was a dazzling deep blue, with the sunlight dancing on its surface. A perfect day for whale watching. It wasn’t long before we were on their tail, keeping our distance as to not disrupt their migration. But before long it was us who were being tailed.

There were several younger whales keen to entertain with a series of high breaches and side flips, serenaded by cameras clicking madly from the bow of the catamaran. Whales are curious creatures so they were venturing close to our vessel, much to the excitement of all on board. Squeals from grown men and women, when they spotted one of these marvellous creatures breaking through the surface, were not uncommon.

After a few hours’ of adventure we headed back to land, comparing photos as to who captured the acrobatics the best. We were ready for a full afternoon to relax at QT and make the most of our second night in luxury.

We would like to thank to QT Gold Coast and Gold Coast Adventures for their hospitality. There She Blows offers guests two nights’ accommodation at QT Gold Coast, daily breakfast for two in the award-winning Bazaar marketplace, a half-day whale watching tour for two including morning tea and return transport from the hotel to Marina Mirage. This unique package is priced from only $297 per night (based on a minimum two-night stay). There She Blows is available from June 1 until October 31 2015.
