Urban Commons engages POPconcrete to create Foodscape

Local design studio POPconcrete has paired up with Urban Commons to help bring the Melbourne company’s Foodscape project to life.

Aiming to revive the spirit of commons in urban environments by connecting people with food, Urban Commons has created Foodscape – a productive garden around which the community can gather. Made up of three modular units, the Foodscape sees primary planters called Plots joined by a seating element called a Plank, and concrete corner planters that acts as weights and joiners called Pots – and designed by Brisbane’s POPconcrete. Not only do these modular planters provide a way to grow food in our urban concrete jungle, but aim to empower the community to grow food together and make lasting social connections through this joint ownership.

Additional modules can be added to create a range of configurations, with the connected seating and garden beds comfortably fitting into private courtyards or unfurling across large unutilised public spaces. Urban Commons is currently running a competition, where designers, architects and landscape architects can submit a concept design for a project that features a Foodscape, with the winning designer awarded a plot module for their company. Entries close Tuesday April 22.
