Base Architecture creates time-lapse camera prototype

One sunny Brisbane afternoon, an architect, a creative director and an electrical engineer who had gotten together for a few beers came about the discussion topic that it would be interesting to capture the construction process of a building – the drawings and plans being brought to three-dimensional life. A little market research for a reasonably costed product left the trio empty handed, and so, armed with a few more beers, ideas on how to build one began to roll in and they set about creating a prototype time-lapse camera.

The creation of Shawn Godwin of Base Architecture, the time-lapse camera prototype will clearly and accurately capture each element of a build, and effectively, the client’s house dreams coming to life. Base Architecture recently completed a project where the team took the same photo at the same time every Friday for 14 months, which was then stitched together into a short video and a black-and-white printed flipbook. Taking this process a step further, the time-lapse camera will offer increased quality and detail, meaning the footage can be used in many ways throughout the build. For this project, Shawn will also be experimenting with GoPro footage shot from a remote-control helicopter to capture the context of the site.

The house project where the camera will be installed has been 18 months in the making for Base and no doubt many years of planning for the clients, so to capture the project as it’s being realised and turn the footage into a short film will be a significant token of the journey for all involved – client, architect and builder.
