To be defined as sculpture, a work is required to tick three specific boxes: form, material and three-dimensional space. This gives artists a lot of room to move and, these days, can include works that indulge in a little film, photography, painting or performance as well. Sculpture Is Everything will soon be unveiled in the art haven that is GOMA at South Bank. The exhibition was created to celebrate the gallery’s current collection of sculpture, including its latest notable acquisitions. Every form of sculpture imaginable is present to peruse, from installations to singular objects, assemblages and monuments.
Visitors will be able to saunter through the exhibition, coming into contact with works from Chinese political critic Ai Wei Wei, as well as those of Anish Kapoor, whose distinct steel pieces feature in major cities all around the world. Perhaps his most renowned is the incredible Cloud Gate – the public sculpture sitting in Chicago.
Sculpture Is Everything runs from August 18 to October 28.
