The Weekend Series: five page-turner books you should be reading right now

Look, we get it – finding time to sit town and devour a good book can be difficult. We all readily admit that we feel better after a good page-turner, so why don’t we make it a regular habit? The trick is finding a book that you know will be good before you start, but you should never judge a book by its cover. We’ve done the hard yards to find five books from Australian (or Australian-based) writers that will stimulate, enlighten and entertain. more

Live tunes, on-track action and air-guitar competitions combine for this rockin’ race day

Certain pairings are just meant to be – peas and carrots, Ben and Jerry, horse racing and … rock’n’roll? Hear us out here – while it may not seem like the most orthodox combination, the union of Tattersall’s Racing Club and Triple M has come about to treat us punters to a race day that is set to shake things up. Taking over Doomben Racecourse on Saturday July 21, the Triple M Rocks Tattersall’s Race Day comes with all of the ingredients of a rad race day event combined with some seriously rockin’ additions. more

Bittersweet sips – get a flight of bottled negroni delivered to your door

If you too are an appreciator of this classic Italian aperitif, then hear this – you can now get a tasting flight of pre-bottled negronis from around Australia delivered to your door. David Wenham joins the Brandenburg for a sonic journey of the Silk Road

He may not be a household name, but William of Rubruck sure did leave something beautiful behind. During his life, he embarked on an epic quest to convert the Great Khan to Christianity in the Mongol capital of Karakorum. During this time he kept a thrilling manuscript and itinerarium detailing his adventures, which have been given a special new life thanks to the Brandenburg Choir and La Camera delle Lacrime. Coming to QPAC’s Concert Hall for one night only on Tueday August 7, Karakorum: A Medieval Musical Journey is a truly stunning sonic ride that will make you feel like you’re trekking the Silk Road circa the 13th century … with David Wenham as your personal tour guide. more

Fine dining on a dime – feast on Vintaged Bar + Grill’s $29 winter lunch menu

Let’s be honest for a second – in this day and age, finding a decent sit-down meal for under $30 seems damn near impossible. Whether you’re getting dealt tiny portions or trying to navigate convoluted deals, the good old-fashioned lunch special just isn’t what it used to be … unless you’re paying a visit to Vintaged Bar + Grill. You read that correctly – the Hilton Brisbane’s esteemed dining institution might be the last place you would think to go sniffing for a bargain, but this is one deal you’re going to want to make time for. more
